There are design modifications that have been made to Heelys. Merlyn's got some super vert wheels made from skateboard wheels and has been working on extended grindplates, and a lot of people intentionally file their heel brakes down because they don't use or need them anymore. I personally would love to see Heelys with this grindplate in the front. Note that all of these modifications are on the upper end of skill levels, the unbroken ground, for people who are probably better at Heeling than the assorted boffins in Heelys' R&D department.
Anuran- do you even own a pair of Heelys? Have you ever so much as worn a pair? I'm seriously not sure.
Of course your ankles are going to hurt. You're holding your feet up. Duh! Your legs are going to be sore after a good day of running or biking, your arms will probably be sore after a lot of home repair/construction work, and if you do two hundred situps (or, closer to the point, a five minute session of static abs), your abs are going to feel it.
Note that frequent use of certain muscles is going to lead to their development, not their weakness. A five year old with them now, who wears them constantly and even in school, won't even feel it by the time he's fifteen, no matter how long he wears them. Those ankle muscles will have developed enormously.
On the other hand, he may run on his toes even in regular shoes, and may not have much of a heel-toe gait unless he's trained for that, but that's logically the price, and nobody's complained- because, let's face it, who gets the chance to wear them constantly? Like Merlyn suggested, cross-training is the way to promote balanced muscle development (this is widely known- Google).
What it sounds like you're asking for is a pair of Heelys that don't require you to lift your toes anymore, and this is impossible on its face. With the two-wheeled styles you don't have to lift your toes quite so much, but that doesn't solve the basic muscle-holding problem and the two wheeled ones aren't generally well-liked.
Maybe there are things that can be done to make them more comfortable with prolonged use. Maybe there's some tricks of design, or concepts that nobody's thought of yet, that will diminish the stress of toe-lifting somehow without making the shoe less desirable in other ways.
But I can tell you this much- if you've got nothing but baseless assertions as your "proof", complete ignorance of what you're talking about, and the mistaken belief that you're somehow going to magically fix all these problems that don't actually exist in the shoe, you're not going to find them. |

Yeah - I used to get shin splints when I rode Heelys for a long time. Now I can run or ride for .. a really long time. I never get shin splints anymore because my shins are so developed from riding Heelys. |

Yeah. I used to get those ALL the time. My ankles would get real sore after a long day of riding too. |
