Where do you guys get 'em?

I don't mean the kind from when you fall - of course they'd be whichever body part you landed on most likely - I mean the kind you get when you do normal heeling too much:

For me I keep getting pains in my knees: I think it's because I love heeling fast, and to do this I run, throw my body forward as I jump onto my front (left) leg, and kick my back leg hard forward to give a little extra momentum: and of course, when I kick the bag leg the solid wheel tends to hit the tiled floor pretty hard, and my right (back) knee takes a hell of a lot of impact. Sad

At the mo I've also got pains in the tendons behind my knee, specifically the inside ones. They're the ones that are used to pull your lower leg back or hold the knee bent for crouching/heeling. I can't be sure how I got this tho, because this is a new one on me, and only got it after yesterday's four hour practise, which was the first time I did a lot of practise with knee pads on: I'm guessing that the tightness of the pad straps could be the cause, or maybe I just overdid the practise.

edit: oh, I just thought of another one: the strap on my skate-helmet has to be quite tight so that it doesn't wobble around when I'm getting a little carried away. . . and it tends to cut into my chin a bit and mean I can't talk (I know, I know, you're thinking maybe that's a good thing eh? Very Happy ) but seriously, after a few hours it hurts: I'm thinking of making some little custom pad out of foam rubber or neoprene to fix this, but since I'm a bit of a lazy b**** was wondering if some clever store already sells something like this? Or maybe I just need to fork out the cash to try a load of different styles of helmets and pads until I find one that's comfortable for me.

So, how about you guys: you ever get aches/pains from constant heeling?

I get them in my upper ankles and shins really bad. Sometimes my calves and quads when I'm doing vert.

I get pain when I don't skate...

Usually the calves and achilles' tendon gets to me when I stop skating

When I do skate, it depends on what I do... If I just scoot around stores or work, then really its just exhaustion...

When its actual tricking, I get pain in my groin and back of the thigh a lot. The lower back hurts me doing vert, but its because my stance is wrong

My big toe. Not joking. My left foot being in the front position 90% of the time kills my left big toe. I'm beginning to think it may have been previously broken or something cause it get's the old-man ache.

aside from my sprained ankle, it would have to be my left quad, as that's usually the leg I have forward. When I first started, I had all sorts of pains in muscles in my legs I'd never used that much before, but now it's primarily the quads. 'course after my hiatus, I have a feeling I'll be getting some of those starting pains again. :\

Knees mostly for me. But I tore cartiledge in the right one a year ago, and it still gets sore. Also my arches, because they are really high, and really flexible, and most of my shoes don't support them. I can't skate at least another 2 week, but probably another months, so I too will get the starting over heeling pains! Stupid stress fractures...

Taking this topic one step further, and trying not to start another new topic in case the board explodes *chuckle*:

I was at the gym yesterday, and during my workout I was trying to think about how I could do a "Heeling Workout" - what I mean is, trying to work out the best stuff to do at the Gym to complement my heeling: so obviously this thread would be a great place to start: anything people says Heeling makes hurt, I could work on strengthening that muscle or part, so that it would make me a better heeler.

Obviously it might not be much of a difference, as I realise Heeling is 99% balance - but there are ways you can train muscles as fixators so that they can be better for balancing, or so I understand

Of course, I suppose once you get to the vert tricks, you're pretty much using every muscle in your body in one way or another, to add to the momentum and amount of "air" you get, but I'm sure there's some muscles/ligaments/joints etc that need to be better than others: most likely the core (abs etc) and practically everything in the legs.

To respond out, the workout that I typically do to compliment skating consists of bench weights... Box Squats and Towel Bench usually helps out a lot...

Also with free weights, you can do weighted sit ups and leg curls...

Mostly when it comes to skating, the biggest thing is stamina and you can usually get that by skating A LOT and training your body to get used to the pressures its under...
