The wheel is most likely a Big Duece wheel (black with two smaller wheels and a break in the middle)
The compound is less dense, causing the wheel to grip the floor more then a typical Mega wheel which is why you have to apply more force to move forward |

Yeah, my first Megas were BD's and I used them on Vert. I didn't get enough speed and I had to push off A LOT and it was harder to link things because of the speed loss, but you can still use them...
Actually, it may be better to learn Vert on BD's just so you can get the motion down, then move to MV's to incorporate the speed |

Mav's right, new evo's usually come with Big Deuces unless someone's swapped em out. It can also happen that even with two identical wheels (like two mega's) ones slower than the other. . . this is sometimes down to them not being true (perfectly round) or the bearings/axle. . . . sometimes if bearings are a little out of line, the pressure when the axles are screwed tight seems to create added friction in the races (the groove inside where the little balls run around) . . . re-seating the bearings can sometimes fix this, or it can also be "skated out" by giving them a good few sessions to break them in.
Eventually everyone finds some wheels which are better than others tho, whether it's because they run really true (don't wobble) or the bearings happen to be really fast (this can even happen with crap bearings by pure luck) or whatever. The trick is sorting your good wheels from your bad wheels and using them for the right thing: if you don't notice that (for instance) some mega's you have are perfect, you could take them out on the street and ruin them without even knowing it, so I always keep a close eye out for which wheels are nicer, and save them only for clean skating work where they can shine, like indoor skateparks etc.
Conversely, it just so hapenned that for ages my oldest pair of mega's, which only had standard heelys bearings and had been put through really dirty use, were my absolute best wheels: perfectly true, and really smooth running. This may be the case with your previous set, which might be a contributing factor to why your newer wheels seem slower.
I'd advise using your BDs for street use, since that's what they're best suited to (you'll noticed you don't get stones stuck in the wheel bay as much, if at all).
BD's are quite rare so it's nice to have a pair, I've made sure I snagged about 5 pairs because if they dissapear forever they gotta last me a lifetime.
If you can get 'em RUMBLE wheels are almost as fast as megaverts for vert. . . provided you swap out the abec-5's for something slicker. I've done this and currently a pair of rumbles are one of my best sets. If not, I'd just use normal Mega's with good bearings for vert once you feel safe going that fast.
If you CAN learn to pump and get suitable speed for vert with BD's, nice one, it will make it a little slower to start (which might make you feel safer) and it will seem so much easier when you later go to normal mega's or rumbles or megaverts, but I find BD's make vert harder work than it needs to be, and for me it already seems plenty hard, so I stick to the harder wheels. But yeah, if you're initially worried about the speed on vert, Mav's idea of using the BDs might help.
Just IMHO. |
