Texas-based Heelys, Inc., along with skateboard equipment providers Vans and Consolidated Skateboards, is spearheading a new initiative to build an unearthly skatepark in a very out-of-the-way-place: the Moon.
The plans call for a 20,000 square foot skate park featuring ramps, loops, and an entirely closed-in circular bowl to be built alongside hotels, a miniature water park, and other facilities. The price of this excursion is not likely to be cheap, but all three companies have stated that a number of their sponsored skaters will be given free passes to the lunar resort.
"The commercialization of space was at some point, inevitable, but I don't think any of us were expecting it to turn out this way.", NASA spokesman George Diller stated. "Since low gravity is one of the few things you can't get here on Earth, I think, in retrospect, we should have seen it coming." The Moon has a surface gravity one-sixth that of Earth.
The manufacturing equipment is so large that an entirely new model of shuttle was created to carry it. These Supertanker shuttles are designed to haul twenty tons, and safety concerns were addressed when Elan-Polo executives, makers of Heelys competitor Spinners, flew in them as part of a recent settlement agreement. "We would have used monkeys, but the animal-rights groups would have complained", Heelys CEO Ralph Parks explained.
The project is slated for completion in early April 2010.
Senior NASA officials could not be reached for comment.
