go for itt, and post some pics when you do.

my cousin is actually welding me a metal rail so that i don't have to make a pvc one. cuz pvc, although it's cheap, it gets really sticky after a while and you have to scrape off all of the old wax.

This is the VERY simple rail I made for my son (and now me) to practice on. It's 10 feet long, 'cus that's how long the PVC was. Smile

Need? Of course it doesn't NEED "support beams." The ground supports it just fine. It doesn't need them to keep it from rolling over, either. I can't even MAKE that thing roll without applying force directly to the side of the rail in two places. The only reason I can see for putting feet on it is to get the wood off the concrete to prevent water and/or insect damage, but it's not expensive enough for me to care. Besides, feet would just add more things to trip over when a grind doesn't go well. Knowing that we can hop or fall off without also worrying about another piece (or few) or wood to stumble on is A Good Thing. Now, if I were to make one that's taller, I probably WOULD put feet on it to add stability. I think I'd sooner make a simple fun box with a coping, though.

AMN, that is a simple rail! I agree, if it's stable as it is, why add more to trip on! I may ahve to try that design too, I want a shorter one, so it will fit the space I have, but still looks simple!

With the pipe screwed to the wider side, it's really stable. If it had any more height to it, it wouldn't be.

Maybe you could start by putting it on the grass, taking the wheels out and learning to grind where it's less painful to fall! Then try with wheels on the pavement! That's what I'd try!

that's how i teach people. stick the pvc one in the grass. then move them onto the metal one in the grass. then the metal one on concrete. (:
