Well, my science teacher decided to have a little contest. He gave out an equation to be turned in Feb. 1 for 15! extra credit points on next test. It goes like this: ( remember numbers are subscripts.)

K4Fe(CN)6 + KMnO4 + H2SO4 --------> KHSO4 + Fe2(SO4)3 + MnSO4 + HNO3 + CO2 + H2O

Balance it. More posting for Wondercheese, but anyone taking Chemistry or Physical Science could use a practice/challenge too, im sure.

P.S. NO I'M NOT DOING THIS TO FIND THE ANSWER! I ALMOST HAVE IT DONE! Razz Very Happy

Google > your science teacher.

K4Fe(CN)6 + KMnO4 + H2SO4 = KHSO4 + Fe2(SO4)3 + MnSO4 + HNO3 + CO2 + H2O =>
10 K4Fe(CN)6 + 122 KMnO4 + 299 H2SO4 = 162 KHSO4 + 5 Fe2(SO4)3 + 122 MnSO4 + 60 HNO3 + 60 CO2 + 188 H2O

If you really want to know how this mess is derived, I have some hints:

You have six times as much CO2 and HNO3 as you have K4Fe(CN)6. Can't get the carbon and nitrogen anywhere else.

You can treat SO4 as one unit. That sulfur/oxygen molecule portion isn't separating out.

You have exactly as much KMnO4 as you do MnSO4. One source of manganese.

You have twice as much Fe2(SO4)3 as you do K4Fe(CN)6. One source of iron.

Ooh, that will be fun! I won't have time to play with it until this weekend, I have to prep for the lab I teach today and then I teach ALL DAY on Friday. I'd make them do it, but it's not a chem course....

Yep, he just announced google will get us no where except for checking answers. We have to work it out in front of him. And he knows we can't get numbers like 228 out of nowhere.

time to get to it!
