I got some Atomics for Christmas and I love them; however, I go to college in Idaho and there is a ton of snow. The sidewalks around school are heated so the snow melts, but they are usually wet. I would like to be able to wear my heelys ALL the time without worrying the bearing will get rusted.

Is there something I can do to waterproof my wheels? Or wheels I can buy that are waterproof?

It isnt the outer that really screws up the wheel the most. It's the bearings inside aren't very resistant. They do have ceramic bearings that don't rust which may solve your problem. I hope you have a job because they arent exactly cheap!

Yeah, I was referring to my bearings rusting. Anyway, I was searching around looking for ceramic bearings when I was reading about sealed bearings and also teflon coated bearings. Would any of these work? Here is one page I was looking at: http://www.vxb.com/page/bearings/CTGY/Heelys

Also, if I decide to use my heelys in the rain, how long should I expect them to last? I used to use my rollerblades when I was a kid in the rain all the time.

Ummmm, like to your bearing question I think they would. But if you want to really know then I would ask Merlyn DHC, He's like the smartest guy on the forum!

As to how long they will last, Heelys are very Durable. The shoe itself will last you pretty much until you grow out of them, the bottom is rreeaallyy thick as you can probably see. The shoe itself will last like forever but the wheels you gotta watch. There have been issues by people in this forum about wheels seperating from the core and stuff like that. HSL is pretty good with replacing those though, so like yeah, last long time but be prepared to buy a few sets of wheels if your in really rough conditions

Yeah, the shoe'll last practically forever. The wheel separation only seems to happen to large people who are hitting their wheels with a lot of force.

Ceramic bearings are expensive but if you're going to be out in wet weather, you're either going to have to buy them or do a lot of ritual drying every time you come home.

So already you've got some good advice on the table from Seth and Hailey. Here's one more.

If you must Heely when its wet out, consider a water resistant lubricant like white lithium. It may not be perfect, but it'll protect your bearings.

Since white lithium is very viscous (H4L?), it'll act as a water barrier as well as a repellent.

The downside is that you'll have to clean out your bearing often (as it can only do so much). Remember, WD-40 is a water repellent, but not a lubricant.

One side note - if you do go with ceramic, consider going to a Big-Deuce. It should afford you slightly more traction. And its size should help you overcome gravel and salt that people put down for melting ice. Finally, 608 (Big-Deuce and Mega) ceramics are much easier to come by than 688 (for FATS).

My final advice? Find a nice indoor skate park for any tricks.

Good luck!

Thanks H4L!

You're right on top of things!

(funny, but at this rate, you will increase your vocab)

It's true .. I did something similar by reading comicbooks (X-Men) when I was little.

Yeah. I read A LOT. HP books and such. I like large fantasy novels. Those are my favorite.

And see, Heeling IS educational! Just stick with me!
