Hey what's up... I just bought my first pair of Heelys. I'm 23, about 6'3, 170lbs, atheletic, and got a size 12 that fit perfect. I've been getting a hang of them for about an hour now, and damn... it's a workout for my legs (I play soccer too!). I even broke a sweat.
Question is, I guess... am I ever gonna get used to em? I bought them mainly for when I'm at work (grocery store). But, I work 8 hour shifts...

Yep, you'll definitely get used to them. And what a workout huh? I go to the gym 3 times a week and push a fair couple hundred kilo's with my legs, but there's nothing like the workout an hour of heeling gives me Smile

Enjoy Smile

another question... what kind of lubricant should I use on the bearings? I did find this old tube of Brain Lube that I think used to be used for yo-yos, would it work well?

Brain LubeSynthetic based oil with Teflon (PTFE) is ideal for lubricating the few places on pinball machines that require it -- motors, gears, etc. The 7 ml pen style dispenser tube is great for tight spot applications. Brainlube.

Not being a yoyo fan (well, not since I was 10 about 20 years ago) I've not heard of that stuff but since it's for bearings it sounds ok.

My main prerequisites for bearing maintenance are as follows:

1) remove (from wheels, without damaging shields etc)
2) clean (remove water/grease/dirt from previous use)
3) lubricate (I use specific non-greasy bearing lubes that don't attract future dirt)
4) refit

I use an automotive choke/carb cleaner for the clean stage and bones speed cream (or other specific bearing lube) for the lube stage, but it's all trial and error: give your yoyo lube a try and let us know how it goes. Smile

Grocery stores are one of my favorite places to heel! I'm 28, female, and I've been heeling almost a year now. I got mine after my department banned razor scooters from hallways. We have a city block of hallway between my office and the main office, and between the 2 labs I work in! I got used to walking on my wheels and transitioning from walk to roll without being caught in few weeks! I'm not very athletic, so it probably took me longer than most! Enjoy, heelys are REALLY FUN!!!

I'm a fan of Tri-Flow. Not much grease, lots of water repellent. Heavier stuff seems like it'd gum up the works more than anything else.

I agree with Slicer, try to stay away from anything too greasy, you'll just mess it up further.

To be honest, when avoiding snow/rain/dirt just walk on your toes. Also, when the money is right, pick up a spare set of bearings. If you're just in it to roll around the generics will get the job done. If you want performance then I would pick up some higher class bearings.

The one rule of thumb is to stay away from WD40. It will toast a bearing out... period...

As for the muscle aches, you'll have them for about a week. You just need to have the muscle memory built up. When heeling you use completely different muscles for normal rolling. The bottom of your foot may ache, as well as your calf and the thigh. Crap, even doing crabwalks I get the groin ache and even some lower back stuff when on vert. You're working out in a new way and your body just needs to adapt.

Anyways, nice mohawk man, and its nice to see yet another adult heeler here. Have fun with it regardless, its a kick ass sport

haha, thanks man. and appreciate all the info...
one more thing though, since i don't know anything about all the bearings... i know i will be just rolling around the generics for the most part (maybe down the road I'll get into some fancier moves, not sure), but i won't lie, i always do like having the best of the best, or at least want some really good quality ones (that keep me rolling longer and smoother).
my shoe is the Strand 9164 Heelys, with the ABEC 7 688 Micro bearings... i think those are really good ones, but you tell me... lol

Syxx676,

First of all, welcome to HC. This is a really mellow place to learn and chat about Heelys.

Mav, ME, Slice have all come up through the ranks in their skating.

My opinion about lubing bearings is that its a short term solution (no pun intended). I used to use white lithium. And unlike the others, its kinda greasy (which means it will muck up faster). But in the end, bearings need to be replaced. So why not aim for performance while they last??

That's just my .02

I just never lube them. they usually break waaaaaaay before it even needs more lube so buying in the new ones in the end come to the same thing, and strands come with clear fats. those break about as easily as megas, and let everyone on heelychat tell you their woes about mega wheels. your going to be rolling in a grocery store so i doubt youll be encountering rust anytime soon besides a little water here and there wont kill them.

Totally understand. You pay more, but you pay less in having to replace them a lot.

Another technique in the Heelys world is to pick yourself another set of Fats. This way you can have a set of wheels for work (smooth floors, light dirt) and a set if you want to be adventurous and do some outdoor stuff. You don't have to worry about cleaning bearings and if you do get airbubbles, then you still have a spair set of wheels.

But then, still have yet to blow any of my clear fats. I use them on vert and aggressive street stuff. My girlfriend has strands (I think) and she also has yet to blow the wheels out.

My megas on the other hand -shudders-... Yeah, if you get a mega shoe, by replacement wheels... Thousands... perhaps millions...
