For the chemistry-impaired: Zinc sulfide (+ small amounts of copper) is the glowy stuff.

Which the outside of the shoe (tongue + sides) really doesn't have enough of. Leave them under a few incandescent bulbs for an hour... and they barely glow at all when you turn it off. If you want a boost, get some zinc sulfide goo (Or strontium aluminate! Expensive, but much brighter.) and apply carefully- but then if I wanted to do that, I wouldn't have bought these in the first place. Razz

The wheels, on the other hand, have a lot more of it, but that doesn't help when your feet shade the wheels. This means that you have to take the wheels out and leave in a well-lit place if you want a glow- no more putting your shoes with wheels in your closet. Unintended consequences, how I love thee.

I imagine they're a lot better under a UV/violet light, though. Anyone want to go to a rave wearing these? Or put them in a tanning bed when you're not using them? Smile

The wheel axles are, of course, C-Clips. Useless. Fortunately everyone on this board has extra axles, but it's annoying not being able to just replace the bearings. (Anyone had any success putting a C-Clip back together, yet?)

Like all Ninjas, they tend to cramp the lower part of the toes at first, but that goes away with some wear.

Now if you'll pardon me, I need to go find some tritium... Very Happy

Franny had a video where he cleaned his c-clip atomic wheels. Just use a c-clip remover and its easily taken off and put back on.

My Fury's are still very crampy at the toe though...

Instead of Ninja Glow's i think i might go for TKO's.

Cool, I ordered me some of those glow's from Zappo's (not trying to rhyme, honest) for $59 on Monday - they should be arriving soon. Sadly I notice the price has been put back up to $69 now.

And seth's right about the c-clip: you just need the little pliers. They're sometimes called "circlip pliers" and sometimes "c-clip" but you'll need the smallest ones you can find - most are designed for bigger bearings like in automotive situations, so the ends don't always go close enough together to undo Heelys c-clip axles.

TKO's look ok (similar to ninja's) but according to Journey's they're FATs, but i notice Journeys website is not always right.

I know exactly what you mean about the toes feeling squashed tho - I noticed that with my other Ninja's too - but as said above it does get better after a while.

According to Journeys they're a model of Heelys that looks a bit like Ninja's but with FATs: linky

But they might have Mega's - some of the shoes pictured on Journeys sat FATs when you can see they're Mega's.

TKO in sz's 13-5 have fats.

6 and Up have Megas.

the one's on display at my Journeys are all fats including fantasia but theyre all size 4 and then i went with my cousin to make him try them on because i was curious and the 6's came with medium mega. I went to journeys for adults and they finally restocked heelys where i asked to try on 9's and those came with megas.

I find that the Glows have the best effect when worn outside for a while and then rolled into a less-bright store. Even works somewhat on cloudy days.

I was serious about Tritium, though. I want some Heelys Radioactive...

Add some of this to some Angelus (the lighter the color the better) and make whatever you want!! As for the wheels.... well, you're on your own for that. Smile

(I've used the above glow pigment above and it mixes well w/ Angelus)

BTW.... charge w/ a blacklight. It'll last longer and will be much brighter.

Holy crap, you weren't kidding about that blacklight.

I bought a pair of real ones- not one of those "oh hey let's put a UV filter over a light bulb, dur hur" ones. Take three AAA batteries, powerful as hell. I swear I can feel the UV hitting my skin...

I haven't seen real, spectral violet (410 nanometer light) in some time... these emit plenty of that, too.

These charge the glow MUCH faster and longer-lasting than incandescent. Doesn't even come close!

hmmmm, note to self: If I get glows, charge them in the lab on the UV light box, or in the UV sterilizer!

Sounds like a plan, a friend of mine wants one. But if he looks for one on eBay for example, how can he tell if it's a real blacklight or just a bulb with a filter?

I mean is it best to search for "UV bulb" or "black light" or "blacklight" etc.

And to the LED versions work ok or is it best to go for conventional bulbs?

Thanks in advance.

The crap ones look like lightbulbs, and there will probably be warnings about heat. (Yeah, you're using black-body radiation for this.. there's gonna be heat!)

For good ones, either fluorescent or LED work fine. Mine are LED. Search for "Blacklight"- the good and the crap are generally sold as the same for this, as far as I can tell.. (No, I don't know enough to give good brand names)
