note: this topic was made by text taken from my commerce wanted post to streamline it:
I've recently noticed there's a difference between Big Deuce Axles and Mega Axles from shoes of the same size. . . the Deuce Axles are slightly shorter in total length, and yet have a greater width between the bearing stops, which is perfect for some experiments I'm doing with making custom wheels. They also have slightly narrower ends - so if put in (say) Ninja's, one end will wobble around - at least this is the case for all four of the pairs of Big Deuces I have, although it's a very slight difference since I'd never noticed it in months of using them.
I've also noticed that the "slowing" effect of big deuces due to wheel deformation, is a lot more noticeable with heavier heelers (big adults) and almost non-existant with little kids (i.e., a light kid on big deuces in a smooth-floored mall would travel almost as far as on Megas if you gave them the same amount of shove*, and yet a big adult on deuces would slow much sooner than the same adult on Mega's)
* disclaimer: please don't shove kids wearing Heelys . . . that is, not unless they want you to |

If you want a good trial and error for a nice custom wheel, I would try to make a hard compound of a BD wheel. The soft compound does suck when riding around, but the cool thing is that the BD wheel helps when out on the street. Whenever I street skate (and I mean actually go out on the street) the BD wheel displaces the rocks to the middle, working a little nicer then the rock getting stuck in the shoe like with a regular mega.
And I have noticed the axle thing as well with the BD and the Mega. I don't quite know if there will be any advantages of the axle size or not though. |

And the advantage to the greater width between the axle-bearing-stops comes when you need to put more bearings on a single axle and still have room for separation (like in custom free spins made with 608 bearings) |

Good post there slice, I was too lazy to do the pic thing but now I don't have to - if anyone asks I can just point them to your post
What seth said is true. And although they're both 86a durometer compound, deuces seem squishier than mega's so I'd write this as:
| Quote: | Mega: soft, fast, medium squishy, gets air bubbles and stones, but good in malls.
Deuce: soft, slow, very squishy, get disconnected, less stones, good for street.
rumble: about the same as mega, although some say it's harder, and the bearings are only ABEC-5 so swap them out for speed if necessary.
megavertz: hard, VERY fast if you swap-out the stock bearings, NON squishy, and as Merlyn admits: best used just for vert, as the hardness can send a lot of shocks through your joints on rough ground - the squishiness of deuces does have it's uses in absorbing some of the roughness of the ride.
FATs: slow, but easier to conceal under the shoe, less awkward for beginners to walk in, not recommended for rough ground. |

It's "Hear, hear!"
But there's no need to be mean to me just because I like to try my best to be helpful and accurate. |
