'overtake' in English English = 'pass' in American English.

| Nobody uses hand signals anymore (where I live, anyway)- mostly because no one except a tiny handful of people know what they mean. When I'm on my bike, I don't even try. |

LOL - true, hand signals are not often used by motorists, although by law they must be used by cyclists, and it's a rule here that ALL road users MUST know them as a backup in case their signal-lights fail or something. The only reason I used the hand signals in this case was that I didn't happen to have any indicators (in the US I believe you call them "blinkers" ?) attached to my ass  , so for safety and to let the other (much larger) traffic know my intended route, I used hand signals.
I love the way the language is different between US and UK - I have to be really careful not to say something that might be misinterpreted, and I'm sure (as shown by this case) that I don't always succeed. For example, here the word "passing" is sometimes used to mean when you err (how do I put this politely - I guess I can't so I'll just say it ) it's when something leaves your body. Like to say it politely you may be said to "pass water" or "pass wind" if you were trying to discuss such things politely. So, with that in mind, saying "passing a bus" in the UK sounds like quite a painful experience eh? |

Another thing that made me think about using the road was this: shortly after passing the bus I came to a pedestrian crossing area (white lines on the road), where vehicles are meant to "give way" (i.e., stop) in favour of people on foot - and I thought - ok, I'm a pedestrian, so I am allowed to go. . . but then, no I'm a vehicle aren't I? After all I just passed a bus at about 20mph lol - and not many pedestrians do that, except maybe Linford Christie?
So that's what I've been puzzling over the last couple of days: whether a fast heeler using the road is considered a pedestrian or a vehicle? Or maybe a hybrid vehicular-pedestrian? *my head hurts* |

| You're a pedestrian, regardless of speed. A pedestrian is someone who walks, and by all defition, you can walk in Heelys. |

True, but even on a motorcycle, if you plant your toes down you can walk your bike forwards, . . . and a motorcyclist isn't a pedestrian? |

And the easiest way to counter that is: Bicycle (aka, pedal-bike or "push bike" as some folks here call 'em)
BTW, I hope you don't think I'm being "argumentative" - on the net people sometimes confuse passionate debating with argument. I enjoy debating mental/logical puzzles like this - is good exercise for the brain.
If using the road, they (push-bikes) are legally expected to stop for pedestrian crossings/red lights just like cars and other vehicles, although pedestrians are still allowed to go. So if a bicycle with two wheels and (when walking it forwards) two legs (just like a heeler) is classed as a vehicle, perhaps a fast road-using heeler could also be considered so?
But yeah, I gave up on this one too - Is too much of a headache to try to resolve - I'll leave it to future heely philosophers. |

Not quite - a log of wood is sometimes called a "faggot" in the UK, but not fag - fag is just cigarette as you said |
