Um - first the obvious: you need grindplates. Okay, there, I said it.
Next, find a low rail. Smoother the better since you'll be going slow at first. Large rounded rails is best if you're a beginner.
Ride up to the rail (almost parallel) with the rail on the opposite side of your lead foot. So if you lead with your left, then the rail is on your right.
As you get close, about 3-4 feet away (closer if you're just starting), plant your lead foot on the ground.
Then take a step with your other foot but crossing in front of your lead foot. This will naturally help pivot your body to face the rail.
Hop up with (what is normally) your back foot (the one you just took a step with). Land your lead foot on the rail, and immediately get your back one on the rail.
Balance.
The trick is to get your weight RIGHT on top of the rail. At first, you'll only go for a short distance (just like Heeling). But keep at it. Soon, you'll nail the whole rail.
Now - this is just a good way to start. When you've become very comfortable with riding rails, you don't need to take two steps. Eventually you can even just jump off the wheels (depending on the height of the rail). But this is the basics. And its always pays to learn the basics.
Hope that all made sense.

When trying to grind with no grind plates, (bad experience. never try it. ) I used this chunk of Wet Willy skateboard wax. Candle wax has also worked for me when I used to skate. |
