Edit: Sightings of these things have also been reported in malls and shoe stores. Although Heelys' lawyers are stomping on them, beware- some of them are still out there.
If you're searching Ebay, beware: There are a LOT of low-quality imitators on that site.
Most of these knockoffs are referred to as "Air skates", "XTX brand roller shoes", or the seller simply lies and says they're Heelys or "Heelies".
If it retracts, it's not Heelys. Retractable wheels might seem like a great idea but they add weight and height to the shoe. That extra half-inch has to go somewhere and it's either going to be taken out of the cushioning (bad) or adding to the platform of the shoe (worse). And if anything bumps the button... you figure it out. Similarly if anything gets inside the retraction mechanism, it's not like you're going to be able to take it apart and fix it.
Bearings? I'm not even sure if these things have real bearings. They might just be spinning the wheel around the axle, with no ball bearings at all. Yes, this is possible, although a very bad idea- there's a lot more friction, and these imitators will be a LOT harder to use. Most Heely auctions discuss the wheel types and bearings involved. The imitators never will.
The wheels on the imitators are clearly made out of cheap plastic. They're going to get carved to pieces the moment they hit a bumpy road. Ever take a sled on concrete and see all the huge scratch marks? That will be your kid's wheels, over and over again.
Similarly, the rear parts of these shoes aren't made out of the same rubber that real Heelys are. You think kids wearing down the backs of real Heelys are bad? These things will be rubbed to nothing. In a number of other ways, they are simply not made to the specifications that real Heelys are, and this difference can mean the difference between a successful trick and a messy fall.
Don't bid on the imitators. They're cheap for a reason. |

I have bought many items off ebay but have never been so bold as to buy heelys on there because of all the immitators and attention heelys have gotten. I have 2 pairs of heelys one of which i bought in stores and the other i bought from zappos. I think this is a good topic to bring to parents attention because of this time of year. I agree with slicer and encourage all gift buyers to be careful in what they buy and where they buy it.

The urethane is probably inferior, the bearings are almost certainly inferior (and may be impossible to replace), the entire shoe is made out of lower-quality materials, and their design department entirely copied Heelys' design, cutting corners all the way.
That and patent law makes them illegal to make in most countries.
Need I go on? |

yeah thats dead true, im getting sick of those fakes. since they are not exactly the same design, heelys has less power. still, they gotta GET RID OF THOSE FREAKING $20 crap shoes man they are anoyying. every tiem i go to the mall i see real heelys and the impostors.i think that the "fake" heelys go slower, but then i dont really know since im faster than any kid i meet lol. |

If you bought anything from this site, I pity you. And your kids.
