So I was tryin to show the lil'kings that you can do things on HEELYS other than PUSH>GLIDE today. I broke out the 'interwebz' and was showing them a few of the vids posted here. As I was watching, I was a little baffled. When most peeps did any tricks , be it stalls/grinds/airs/etc... there seems to always be this 'step' to the toes. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of rolling in the 1st place? I mean, don't get me wrong ... I can't do it myself!! But shouldn't it be a smooth glide/roll to trick and back to the wheels?? I know it's gotta be tough as the toe is just there in the way. But is that a goal of anyone? Even watching some halfpipe footage I noticed a nice little pushoff at the deck to catch air. I haven't even bothered to step onto a ramp yet (cause if you can't cook... you should stay out the kitchen!!) but would like to know if thats just the norm and I should just get use to it?! |

You're sounding like the local skateboarders.
Unless you can jump off your wheels, you're going to need to get your toes involved. End of story really. If you can jump high in the air without hitting your toes, you'd probably be a shoo-in for Team Heelys. |

You sound like jcardin.
You pretty much have to transfer to your toes to jump. It's pretty hard to transfer from your wheels straight to an object. I've been trying, but it hurts the knees. Bad. |

well put slicer. You also need to keep in mind that Heelying is a new sport. these things take time to develop. If you would have asked a heeler 6 years ago if they thought a half pipe was possible the answer would be no. But now with practice, talent and a more sophisticated shoe the possibilities are endless. |

Yeah yeah... don't get me wrong!!! I surely wasn't bashing. Just wondering if there was another way. I use to ride/compete flatland BMX before it was cool (jeebus.. like 15 years ago +) and they'de crucify you if you weren't constantly rolling. Touch a foot to the ground? Might as well DQ yourself. I just haven't seen it covered anywhere (not that I looked very hard or searched for technique) and thought I'd ask.
Hmm.... wonder if you can do it on ToGos??
HAHAHA >>> I JOKE !! I KID !!!!
But thanx for the 411. I won't punish the kids for using their toes anymore.
HAHAHA !!! I JOKE AGAIN !! |

You don't have to use your toes (sole) if you skate vert
If you learn, you can hit grind rails and air-out without stepping. But it’s not for everyone.
And even then, it’s often useful to use your toes. For instance, stalling and wallplants - or rebounding (where you bounce off two objects before skating again).
What people have to understand is that Heelys is a hybrid. It’s not an inline, nor a skateboard. Tell you the truth, in today’s world of ever increasing hazards in these extreme sports, its just seems like a never ending arms race to see which discipline can do the most dangerous thing. People, like many motocross or BMX do just plain crazy stuff. Half the time I don't know if its actually FUN any more. Fun? Remember Fun?
Heelys is about Freedom. It’s the best in personal mobility. It doesn't pretend to need to be an extreme sport. But it’s versatile enough to play in just about any space.
That's my .02

I use my toes to jump onto the rail, but usually can land on just my wheels. But when I stall I have to use toes going up and down. |

That's one of the reasons I love vert. You can do everything without landing on the sole. But again, its not an inline. I like walking OFF the court and just being able to bring nothing with me.

I'm a newbie at heelys. But, isn't the whole point not to only use your wheels all the time? If you wanted to only use wheels, use rollerblades or something.
But, if you want to choice of wheel or shoe -- that's when heelys come in.
No sense of getting heelys if you're only going to use it as a shoe or only as a wheel. Do both!!! |
