reverse is backwards >.>

just take off your brakes completely and practice. taht way you dont hit your brakes and cheat going forwards and dont trip on the brake going backward.

um no.

manual is one foot on either foot you feel more comfortable with

reverse manual which is also known as cheating death is when you go backwards on one foot on either foot.

Falling when you do this trick is funny because you really cant save yourself. I was trying this yesterday and my foot just shot out backwards and i did major faceplant.

WARNING: this might get long, and it's not possible to concentrate on all of these things at once whilst learning to manual, so if you need to, just concentrate on a bit at a time, until you think you've got it feeling right it for yourself.

Here goes:

I spent months working on the manual and made a load of notes on my old phone about all the little revellations I had, but sadly that phone died spectacularly. Here's how I learned tho, as best as I can remember.

Manual is much easier on a smooth surface than a rough one... make sure you learn on a perfect floor at first, like smooth cement or tiles with no cracks. Even the smallest cracks can throw you out of a manual when you're new at it... but once you get the hang you can manual over rougher stuff.

I personally found it easier to start learning manual on my strongest leg, which for me was the one I used in back when learning to heel, although with all my tricks I don't consider them learned until I can do them on both legs, so now I can manual on either, but I still prefer the stronger leg. You might be different tho, I hear some people heel with their strong leg in front.

When learning to manual you are going to fall out of it a lot, so if you can it might be advisable to wear protective gear and take the wheel out of the foot which you won't be rolling on. I know a helmet can make you hot but to solve this you can either crank the AC colder or just keep a cold drink nearby. At first using only one wheel means you can stamp your other foot down to prevent a fall, but after a while it just gets annoying so once you can comfortably save yourself from a fall even with both wheels in, just go back to learning with both. Also, whilst learning with one wheel is beneficial in that it gives you a solid foot to land on, it prevents you learning to roll into a manual, and means you have to jump into a manual, which can make the balance tricky for those new to manuals, but eventually you'll be able to run and jump to it without thinking about it.

The trick to perfecting the manual (at least, the way I learned it) is getting the shape of your whole body right so that you are balanced - because you have to keep the same amount of weight in front of the foot as behind, and the same amount of weight to the left as to the right, a good manual is about the whole body, and not just the leg. For example, at first I tended to lean too far forward (because I didn't want to fall back and crack my head) which meant I was always falling onto my toes or being forced to revert to normal heeling.

You have to find that very fine point where your whole weight is central above the wheel you are rolling on.

Also, when new to manuals, crap bearings or soft wheels can be a real hindrance... you'll learn a hell of a lot about which wheels run smoothest when manualling on them.

There's much more that could be said about manuals but, that should be enough for now. Sometimes you can think to much about it (I do) which can hinder your learning, and sometimes you really just need to FEEL it for yourself to get it right.

So just keep practising in a quiet place with a large floor (quiet meaning no distractions from other people to put you off, and large meaning no nearby walls to put you off, because whether you like it or not sometimes you will find your body will lean away from a wall, subconsciously trying to avoid it, and with a manual this = fail. So yeah, find an ideal place, and just put in the hours.

Some days when I was learning I could do it well, 50 feet no problem, and the next day I found I just couldn't do it... manual's like that at first, it's a tricky trick. Smile When you have an off day, just don't let it bother you. Just go do something else and after you've had a good night's sleep you may find that the next day you're really "in the zone."

Another thing I did to learn was collect and bookmark ALL the video's of people who were good at manuals, to see how they did it. There's several different "shapes" you can be in whilst manualling. But basically they're all about keeping your centre of gravity above the wheel.

Above all, just don't give up, and have fun, and you'll get there. If you need more help, ask again next month and I'll try to give more advice, but yeah, if you keep at it, eventually you'll feel it. Smile

No problem. Always glad to help a fellow heeler. Smile

So if you play football (soccer to americans) you usually kick with the same leg you have in front when heeling? Smile

yes, manual = footie, but you shouldn't be dragging the brakes - I know if you learned that way it's a lot harder to learn without dragging the brakes since it requires different balance, but yeah, for learning to footy you should never use the brakes, it'll only hinder you later on, plus it'll kill the brakes of course, so I suppose the only time you should footy on the brake is if you plan to do vert. Smile
