That's "inspire", not "insight". Smile

Slicer - the point is to have the KIDS find the word that's out of context .. not the adults.

And I wasn't going for "inspire" they were supposed to correctly identify that I meant "incite".

D'oh. I thought you were just trying to be funny again.

I suppose it's a mute point, but for all intensive purposes, incorrect homonyms will be the death nail of good English.

LOL - are you being inentionally funny now? Cuz I think you mean a homophone (a word pronounced the same as another but differing in meaning, whether spelled the same way or not) and not a homonym (a word the same as another in sound and spelling but different in meaning).

string('insight') not= string('incite')

Its so hard to tell in text when people are being funny. There's so much lost in translation (from speech to typing). So I tend to just overlook mistakes .. God knows I make my share then I'm NOT trying. LOL

Sidetrack story - one time I wrote in the huge report that went to the boss and everything. I repeated used an acronym incorrectly. The correct use for "Service Delivery Team" is obviously "SDT" .. but I kept putting "STD" all over my document. Luckily the report was otherwise technically flawless. And boss had a good chuckle.

.
.
Seth .. STD stands for Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
.
.

Now, you don't know how lucky you have it in English. In Chinese there are usually 3 to 5 common uses of the same phoneme differentiated by minute variation in inflection.

So for instance, the word "rain" can change to mean "fish", or a "preposition", or a "think", or four other less common words. The variation in tone is so slight that most foreigners cannot differentiate the sounds unless they grew up knowing the language.

That's why Cantonese (not Mandarin) is considered one of most difficult languages to learn.

But luckily we have a near exclusive lexicon system. Written words are (almost) never used to mean the same thing (talking traditional Chinese here, not that simplified stuff). And that's why we don't have don't have an alphabet - because the written language is not phonetically based. Its symbolism based characters. The basic character set that kids have to learn by the time they are in Jr High is about 5000 different characters. Try THAT without a base alphabet.

So .. English is a great universal language because it is so easy to learn .. even if imprecise and problematic.

Wow - what a rant.

I was hired already at the time .. they didn't fire me if that's what you're asking. And you don't fired for something like that anyways.

That was a long time ago .. but I still remember it cuz it was really embarrassing.

So if you were reading a book and you came to a word (symbol) that you didn't know, would there be anyway to "sound it out" or figure out its meaning?

Um .. nope .. well .. that's true and not true. Let me try and explain. First of all, you are screwed because there's no way of sounding it out. But you could guess (no way to be sure) because a composite of the lexicon is often used for the sound.

You can also figure out some of its meaning because Chinese is a symbolic and very logical. For instance, consider the word for wood, it looks like a tree.

Now consider the symbol for forest, it looks like a bunch of trees.

So Chinese is very logical. Its built into the core of the language.

You have to memorize a lot of Chinese before you can read anything. The base lexicons are around 500 characters .. then you use them to form some 5000 characters.

So in high school I picked up German and French with little problems. Romance languages (languages derived from latin) are much easier.
