Its good to wear gear.
But its just as important knowing HOW to use your gear.
If you fall get to your kneepads first. Never try to stop short (abruptly). Always try to slide on your gear.
If you stop abruptly, the force has to go somewhere. And that somewhere is usually right back at you!
Sliding allows the force to dissipate. Its kinda like why parkour peeps roll out of everything. You want to diffuse the force, not absorb it abruptly.
So .. kneepads first .. then slide. If need be, kneepads and wristguard .. then slide. This will save you a lot of pain.

meh.....I like to fall on my side and roll out of it instead of just throwing my knees forward. It's the thing that gets me hurt the least. |

ya, i'm learnin to fall "correctly". which seems like an oxymoron.
"it's not fly...it's FALLING, w/ style"...XD
love that movie. but ya, i might invest in some gel sliders or wrist guards, eventually, when i can afford it. |

I'm pretty sure the wrist guards, even gel sliders, are cheaper than a visit to the emergency room... even with really good insurance.
just sayin |
