don't jump onto it first, just put your front foot onto the rail, then your back ... |

Actually for high stuff, I make sure I can even make it up to it. I'll stand next to it and see about how high it is, then I'll jump to see if I can even make it that high. If I can, then I'll attempt a stall to see how much balance I have. Finally, when I attempt the grind, I take my wheel out, because if I bail out for any reason, then it will be one less thing to worry about when I'm avoiding having my face meet the pavement.
Also, I like approaching high rails with a frontside, instead of anything fancy. I always make sure that there is grass behind me (because thats typically how you fall, and I say typically lightly, pending on your skate style), and I check the rails for any obstructions (like gum, kinks, etc). I also carry around a candle stick with me (my cheap substitution for wax) in case I can make it down the rail, I like to have a waxed surface so I don't loose any speed.
Then finally when I feel comfortable with the rail, I'll get my cameraman out there with me, and pop the wheels back in, and make it look good lol.
